(2016) “Cultural markers and cultural blankets in the study of fiction film: A critical examination of the Greek weird wave”

Master thesis, Lund University

This study constitutes an attempt at lifting the cultural blanket which has attributed specific dominant readings to the films of the Greek weird wave, and revealing the significance of film as a culturally complex object.

By bringing together anthropology, film studies, and visual studies, this project stands behind a conscious interdisciplinary approach promoting sensitivity with regards to how the cultural markers of fiction film are identified, analyzed and established as a part of its identity.

Lecture on cinema as medium

(2016) Invited speaker at School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg.

Course: MU1626 Culture and Sexuality in Modern Swedish Society: From ‘the Swedish Sin’ to Queer, 7.5 Credits.

The lecture focuses on the following films in order to discuss aspects of the Swedish culture and sexuality through questions of representation and interpretation. Aim of the lecture is to familiarise the students with the complexity of looking at films as a cultural product.

Course: MU1626 Culture and Sexuality in Modern Swedish Society: From ‘the Swedish Sin’ to Queer, 7.5 Credits.

By watching films that depict the Swedish culture in the course of 40 years, (from the 1950s to the 1990s), this series of seminars attempts to address debates about gender and sexuality in the Swedish society and interactively examine methodological approaches to analyse films as cultural documents.

Presentation at NECS Graduate Workshop: Fictional Technologies & Technologies of Fiction, Poland.

Do we still consider social media as not being a real dimension of ourselves?

Can we create a fictional condition by using social media in order to deceive about our real situation?

Drawing on anthropological approaches and visual studies, this paper engages with the key concepts of technology, fiction, reality and identity, and offers a preliminary model for understanding the complex interaction between people and social media.

(2013) ‘Of Dogs and Men: Identity, Isolation and Otherness in Giorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth’

Presentation at Contemporary Greek Film Cultures Conference, Hellenic Centre, UK

Drawing on anthropological approaches, as well as theories of mobility and migration, this paper deals with issues of identity, isolation and otherness in a recent Greek film which has generated multiple popular and critical responses and interpretations.

The purpose of the analysis is to negotiate the relation between the ‘we’ and the ‘other’ and its significance for the construction of identity.
